Santa Klawz iz Comin’ to Town

santa_ork_thumbPerhaps wherever you are it’s the most wonderful time of year but on Angelis… Well, are you a fan of Futurama?

Back in November 2006 a scenario was posted by fattdex and we’ve been planning on expanding it out into a full PDF release since about this time last year. We also saw that Ian Mackey had created the wonderful drawing of just the kind of character we were after and he graciously licensed the art under CC so we could include it. Well this year we managed to get everything to come together just in time for the start of December so hopefully some of you will get a chance to play it.

This scenario is for two players with Santa Klawz acting as a Notmob. There’s Elvz, explosions, and ever so much festive carnage!

Da Grudge scenario

About six months ago we posted the first of Eren Kauptland’s scenarios, Da Bridge, and hopefully you liked it. Today we’ve got the other one for you – Da Grudge.

If you’ve got a couple of mobs that are always at each other’s throats, well, more so than usual, this might be the one for you. Sticks and stones may break my bones but that’s nothing compared to a choppa to the face!

Much like its predecessor this scenario comes from the Gorkamorka Heritage Project. With any luck we’ll be able to clear out a load of the backload throughout 2015 and get cracking on all the amazing newer stuff that’s out there. Check out one of the forum threads that Flamekebab has created about the project to learn more – The Waaagh, Specialist Games, DakkaDakka.

Gorkamorka gyro-stabilised monowheelIf you haven’t already you might find it fun to take a look at the Gorkamorka index. It’s based on work found on the (now defunct) GameHobby.net section “Exodite’s Gorkamorka Index“. The updated version over on /r/Gorkamorka’s wiki has some gaps in it but over time they’re being slowly filled in.

Today one more entry can be crossed off – Doc’s Serjery from White Dwarf 221. It’s only a single page but it does hold the distinction of being one of the only places the painted bioniks have appeared. Back when Gorkamorka was being sold these were sold in a mixed blister pack for £6 – about £9.50 adjusted for inflation!

GW did make bioniks for Orks before this (in 1992) but as far as we know none of those old parts were reproduced to create this line, despite being about the same scale. Anyway, if you’d like to see the sorts of things that were available back then (and why we praise Kromlech’s bioniks by comparison!) take a look at the single page PDF below.

White Dwarf snippet: Mutie greens

When digging through old issues of White Dwarf there’s more than just articles to be found. Every now and again there’s something hiding somewhere else that isn’t really worth documenting in the index but is too interesting to completely ignore. Here’s one of those little snippets:

Muties sighted (White Dwarf 221)It’s from White Dwarf 221, May 1998, so presumably the photos are from April, perhaps earlier. It’s a bit of a shame that they never released the Mutie steeds without saddles (as the photo shows the saddles were added to casts of the steeds). They’d have been handy for a bit of themed terrain, don’t you think?

When Gorkamorka was first released the Necrons didn’t officially exist, although GW had toyed with the aesthetic in Space Crusade for their Chaos Androids. They’d been planned though and hidden amongst the artwork for Gorkamorka was something rather familiar to modern players…

necron_skull_teaser

It was several months after Gorkamorka was released before the Necrons were launched. By modern standards it was a pretty subdued affair – initially there were only Necron Warriors and Scarabs. As part of that release push there was this showcase article on some rather good Necron-themed terrain, complete with an in-progress Adeptus Paleologos dig site. It’s from White Dwarf 220 and features the work of Dave Andrews, Owen Branham, and Mark Jones.

Heads up for those on mobile connections and similar – the file is about 15 MB.

Today we’ve got something that’s more of a completionist piece than anything else. It’s the original article from the month the old Scorcha model was released (White Dwarf 220). Well, technically it was the new scorcha model as the original was released in 1989/1990 but you get the idea!scorcha_illustration

This article contains both the 2nd edition Warhammer 40,000 rules for the Scorcha and the Gorkamorka rules for it. The latter seems a bit odd as the issue was well into 1998 and the rules for Scorchas have always been in Da Roolz. Slow month for content, maybe..?

Anyway, there’s a download link below. It’s about 11 MB – probably not an issue but a heads-up for anyone accessing the file from a slower data connection just in case.

Gorkamorka meetup at ExiliCon 2015

It’s been a while since the last meetup and the community has been struggling to pin down a date for the next one. In a display of unusual restraint we’ve booked two gaming tables at this year’s ExiliCon without asking anyone. Let’s hope this works out!

It’s happening on Saturday July 11th 2015 in Cambridge (not the US one). Entry is free but it’d be useful if you could post on the Facebook discussion so we can figure out numbers. If we aren’t going to need the second table we’d rather let some other gamers use it!

Doors open at 11 and we’ll have the boards the whole day (ending at 1700). The venue is St Andrew’s Street Baptist Church in the centre of town. In terms of getting there by train it’s a fairly short walk from the train station (15 minutes or so):

whirly_bird_illustrationSome time ago Forgeworld released the “Chinork“. A large Ork helicopter with twin rotors and bags of style. Some time later Ramshackle Games released their own ‘Copter. In 2012 Ogrebane put some rules together and being the nice chap that he is licensed them under Creative Commons. Now to come up with some fun ways of taking out those flying loonies…

We’ve laid these rules out as part of the Gorkamorka Heritage Project. There’s a tag here on tUGS for documents released as part of it in case you’re interested to see what else has come out of it so far. There’s quite a lot of documents we’re still trying to reach the authors of (how many of you still have the same email addresses you had in the late 1990s!). Check out one of the forum threads that Flamekebab has created about the project to learn more – The Waaagh, Specialist Games, DakkaDakka.

Ah yes, the document we were talking about before. Get it here:

Revising the Ork Outlaw MC rules

$

What’s the old saying? “No battle plan survives contact with the enemy” ?

The same is true of gaming rules, as we all know. Azzabat and his fellow gamers in Bristol have been playing Gorkamorka with Flamekebab’s Ork Outlaw MC rules and hammering them on the anvil of experience. What started out as a few questions has got well out of hand and ended up as a fully-fledged revision effort.

Current changes:

  • Bad Meks now cost 8 Teef, not 12.
  • Mektown: Bad Meks may carry out D3 upgrades/repairs rather than visiting Mektown.
  • Nomads can generate income just like Full Patch Members (D6)
  • Banditz rule: riders are now able to shoot even if they turned during the movement phase.
  • Fell off da back of a trukk… rule: All gear gets a discount of 1 Toof (Weapons, armour, gubbinz)
  • Glyph Tatz – Snakebite changed entirely (“When passing within 1” of a model on foot he may make a single attack with a hand-to-hand weapon in addition to the effects of the squashing rules”).
  • Glyph Tatz – Blood Axe changed entirely (“This Ork is has a strategic streak – he may shoot at any point during his movement.”).
  • Nice Place Ya Got ‘Ere… skill may be taken by Nomads
  • Leadership challenge conditions changed: “If the mob’s profit is lower than half the Prezident’s leadership (rounding up)”

There’s a forum topic on YakTribe for the revision and the document itself can be viewed and commented on here:

Easy E’s Ork Klan Rules

$

Occasionally someone ask a question about a document we released a long time ago and one of us digs it up and takes a look to see whether we can remember that far back. These days that tends to result in one more document being added to the refurbishing list. Today’s document is one you’ve seen before – Easy E’s Ork Klan rules. They’re in the new template and look rather swish but other than that they’re unchanged.

Here’s what he had to say about them:

I have been playing ork boyz since they were known as Space Ork Raiders in Rogue Traders days. At first, the orks were a pretty generic “fantasy orc”…IN SPACE! However, the release of Waaagh! Da Orks changed all of that. Suddenly Ork Kulture became relevant as the ork society was fleshed out with glyphs, brewhouses, and oddboyz. The basics of the background of Gorkamorka were seeded.

The ork background continued to expand with such hefty tomes such as Freebooterz and ‘Ere We Go. These books essentially expanded on orks as an army for Warhammer. The Klan system had originally been introduced in Waaagh! Da Orks, but had been explored in much more depth in these later books. When third edition 40K rolled out, the orks moved away from the Klan system in their codex, but Andy Chambers himself decided to tackle making some Klan specific rules for Chapter Approved.

Gorkamorka was released at the end of Warhammer 40K Second Edition when Klans were still in full swing and part of the Ork Second Edition codex. I always felt that leaving the Klans out of Gorkamorka was a huge miss, since they had been an established part of the background for so long previously. The idea of Gorkers and Morkers as the only Ork gang types within the Gorkamorka rules set always concerned me.

I was also an avid Necromunda player. I enjoyed the unique and varied background of the Hive Primus gangs. It provided a bit of flavor that Gorkamorka lacked. Again, I was surprised Gorkamorka did not use a similar system, only based on the ork Klans. The only downfall of the Necromunda system, was that starting gangs had very few differences. Again, this is something I felt was a drawback.

Therefore, when I tackled doing some additional rules for Gorkamorka, it seemed logical to focus on the two aspects of the game I felt were lacking; Klans and gang differentiation. Almost all of the rules here are based on background or rules from previous versions or imaginings of ork klans that came before. Bad Moonz teef naturally grew faster, so they were wealthier. Deathskullz were the best Lootas, painted themselves blue for luck, and made heavy use of Gretchin. Goffs were dead hard fighters, with a lot of nobs.

Whenever you make new rules, potential balance issues arise. The important thing to remember is that no game system is perfect, especially one with as many moving parts as Gorkamorka. No matter what a game designer does, players will find a way to exploit it. Fact. So, like all rules, these will need you and your game group to decide what works, what doesn’t, and where the tweaks need to be. Thankfully, Gorkamorka is a cooperative wargame not set up for tournament play. That should leave plenty of scope for you to use Klans in your games and have a good time sticking in the boot.

Vehicle Bitz from Fox Box

It’s been a while since we singled out a company for their excellent Gorkamorka bitz (five years!) but now seems as good a time as any. Fox Box has been working with Craig “Kiblams” Dolan to put together a range of vehicle bitz for those of you interested in scratchbuilding or converting vehicles. First we’ve got these amazing V8 engines:

Fox Box Engines

By my deeds, I honour him.

Then there’s wheels. Currently they’re in two sizes – medium and large. The mediums are about the size of the front wheels on a modern 40K Ork Trukk and the large are on par with the back wheels. The mediums are also about the size of the big wheels on Gorkamorka-era vehicles (like Rebel Grot ones) so they should be fairly versatile:

Fox Box Medium War Rig WheelsFox Box Medium Worn Wheels

Fox Box Armoured Truck Wheels

Fox Box does a load of other stuff too but this stuff is new and most relevant right now. We’ve also just added Flamekebab’s Gorkamorka Alternate Models List to the side bar – it’s pretty exhaustive if you’re looking for bitz.

Yep – a 3D model ready for printing! Amazing what we can do these days.

Better still the model is under a Creative Commons Attribution license (3.0) so we’re free to share it however we like (as long as we give Tommy credit of course):

Here’s Tommy’s own print:

Incidentally if you’re interested in scans of the original Gorkamorka templates can be found here (make sure your printer is set to scale the document to 100% – not more or less).

Frankenork!

Fox Box FrankenorkAs the nights grow longer there’s more time that monstrous creatures can prowl unseen. In this case though it’s probably more interested in fungus tea and some peace and quiet…

Remember our Frankenork scenario from six years ago? Well one of our lot sculpted Da Monster for a competition a little while back. It’s a direct adaptation of the artwork though so he couldn’t just get copies made for sale without securing permission. That’s all sorted now though (Cheers, Clayton!) and now Da Monster is up for sale over on Fox Box.

To commemorate this we’ve laid out the scenario in the new template and given it a bit of polish. Call it version 1.1 if you like!
